About E. McAuley

Yep, that’s me! This is the awkward face I make when I have to take pictures of myself for my website.

Oh! But you’re here because you’d like to know more about me, right? Let me weave a little tale.

I was born in the western mountains and raised on a hand-shaped peninsula. My formative years were spent rambling through forests, daydreaming about other worlds, and playing make-believe with my friends. To be honest, not much has changed since.

I’ve always loved to read. My parents were both avid readers and my childhood home towered with books of all kinds—sci-fi, fantasy, fiction, mystery, spirituality, philosophy, art, music, you name it. Inspired by the abundant creative realms pressed between the pages, I would spend hours in front of the family typewriter clacking out one-page adventure stories about my toy horses. One Christmas I asked for a filing cabinet so I could properly organize my stories, original characters, and world-building notes. (That very same filing cabinet now resides in my office.)

When it came time to set out on my own, I traveled to the Crossroads of America to study English and Latin. Time passed, as it does, and before I knew it I was embarking on a career in the print-on-demand publishing industry. I spent a handful of years cranking out book designs for one of the largest indie publishers in the world; but I wanted to connect more meaningfully with the projects I was working on. In 2012 I returned to the mitten and began working independently with clients. And so here I am today.

I wholeheartedly believe storytelling is foundational—essential—to humanity at its best. And storytelling, in its myriad forms, is my life. I’m so grateful to the clients who invite me to play a part, big or small, in helping them bring their own stories to life—one letter, one word, one page at a time.

When I’m not at the computer shaping stories, it’s a safe bet I’m out with friends cavorting through the woods and the waters. Even on rainy, windy, dreary days—or perhaps especially then—you might catch a glimpse of me wandering the liminal spaces in true cryptid fashion. Don’t worry. I’ll be back soon to spin yarns by the fire.
